Canvey Island Town Council Steals £2,580.50 From Veteran Charities’ Funds

CITC Night Of NostalgiaFUNDS RAISED from selling some three-hundred-and-forty-four £7.50 tickets to Canvey Island Town Council’s Night of Nostalgia event, held at the Paddocks following the island’s Armed Forces Day celebrations last year on 26th June, never reached the Veterans’ Charities to which they were originally destined. Instead, Canvey Island’s Town Council decided to re-direct all the money to its own depleted bank account.

Night Of Nostalgia TC ReportIn its 2010 Summer Newsletter to residents, the Town Council describes the large hall at the Paddocks as being ‘full to bursting.’ And, later in the same article, states:-

‘Most importantly, the evening raised over £3,000.00 for the armed forces charities.’

In fact, only monies raised from the sale of Georgia Garrett’s CD, which apparently amounted to £1,107.25, managed to reach a suitable home. Its proceeds were split between Help for Heroes and the local charity Combat Stress.

… (14/01/2011) – Despite what some readers are suggesting, my information is that only the Town Council benefitted from this redirection of funds. As I understand it, the 40’s Night, held after the 2009 Armed Forces Day Celebration, was organised by the Canvey Island Independent Party in aid of its own party funds. The CIIP makes that clear in the last sentence, of Page 3, of its Annual Accounts for that year.
