Statement Of Purpose

TRADITION has it that a new title’s first editorial consists of a Statement of Purpose, and that this is then framed and placed on each reporter’s desk so that its governing statements can always be referred to.

The Canvey Beat follows that age old tradition by placing its Statement of Purpose here:-

Obligation and loyalty
  • The Canvey Beat’s first obligation is to the truth.
  • The Canvey Beat’s first loyalty is to the people of Canvey Island and Castle Point.
Essence
  • Unless stated otherwise in an article, all published facts will have been corroborated by two independent sources (at least).
  • No interview will be conducted under UK Lobby terms.
  • ‘Off the record’ interviews will only be conducted under the established Chatham House rule.
  • Reporters will always maintain their independence from those they cover.
  • Journalists will always be allowed to exercise their personal conscience.
  • The Canvey Beat will serve as an independent monitor of power.
  • The Canvey Beat will provide a forum for public criticism and compromise.
  • Unattributed comment will not be published.
Aspirations
  • This blog will strive to make the significant interesting and relevant.
  • This blog will strive to keep its news comprehensive and proportional.
This page would not be complete without an apology for demoting two of these PEJ principles to mere aspirations. My excuse is that I am only one man.

Interesting, relevant and proportional I can probably do: comprehensive may take some time to deliver.
